The holiday season is a time for travel, celebrations, and full calendars—but it’s also a peak time for burglaries. With a few proactive steps, you can help keep your home safe while enjoying the festivities.

Make Your Home Look Lived-In

If you’re traveling, set timers for lights and TVs to create the appearance that someone is home. Ask a trusted neighbor to collect mail and packages so they don’t pile up and signal an empty house.

Secure Doors and Windows

Double-check that all doors and windows are locked before leaving, including garage and basement entries. Reinforce door frames, use deadbolts, and ensure sliding doors have security bars or rods.

Be Smart About Social Media

Avoid posting travel plans or vacation updates in real time. Sharing that you’re out of town can unintentionally invite trouble. Save the photos and updates for after you return home.

Use Outdoor Lighting and Visibility

Well-lit exteriors deter burglars. Motion-activated lights around entrances, driveways, and backyards can make a big difference. Keep shrubs trimmed so windows and doors remain visible.

Consider a Security System (ECG can help with this)

Alarm systems, cameras, and video doorbells add an extra layer of protection and peace of mind. Even visible security signage can be enough to discourage would-be intruders.

A little planning goes a long way during the season. By taking these simple precautions, you can focus on celebrating with family and friends—knowing your home is better protected.

Happy Holidays from ECG!
